Group Styles Inventory™ (GSI)
The Group Styles Inventory™ (GSI) is a research-based diagnostic tool that measures how people interact when solving problems and making decisions together. It reveals the behavioural patterns that either strengthen or undermine team effectiveness.
Used by organisations globally, the GSI gives teams and groups a common language to understand how they currently operate, what’s supporting their performance, and what needs to shift to build more constructive, high-impact collaboration.
What It Covers
The GSI is grounded in the Human Synergistics Circumplex®, one of the most rigorously validated frameworks for understanding constructive and counterproductive behaviour in groups and teams.
The toll measures how team members interact when working through problems and decisions together. The 72-item survey captures 12 group styles that describe the climate of the team's working session, the types of behaviour exhibited by team members, and the impact of the team as a whole on its individual members. Summary data is also generated on team effectiveness, solution quality, solution acceptance, and team synergy.
The result is a clear, evidence-backed picture of how the team is currently operating: what's supporting performance and getting in the way, and where the greatest opportunity for growth lies.
The Process
Michelle designs each GSI engagement around your team's specific context and goals.
The GSI is a flexible tool, which can be used as a standalone team diagnostic, administered during or after a structured problem-solving session, or paired with a Human Synergistics simulation for a more immersive team development experience.
Regardless of format, the process follows a consistent arc:
- Initial consultation to understand your team's challenges, dynamics, and the outcomes you want to achieve, as well as the format that will deliver the most value for your team.
- Facilitated activity and survey completion where the team undertakes an agreed activity, which requires discussion and decision-making. Following completion, each team member responds to the 72-item online survey, reflecting on how the team interacted during that specific problem-solving or decision-making discussion.
- Facilitated debrief where Michelle guides the team through their results. The focus is on creating space for honest, productive conversation about how the team operates and what needs to change.
- Action planning to translate insight into clear team commitments and next steps that keep the momentum going beyond the facilitated engagement.
