Wages have flat lined in recent years but there are simple ways to get a pay rise and even bump your salary up to more than $100K a year.
Career expert Michelle Gibbings sat down with TODAY Show hosts Karl Stefanovic and Georgie Gardner to share tips on getting that dream salary.
“It’s not like the old days where you’d have a birthday and you’d get a pay rise,” Gibbings told the show.
“These days it’s a battle to keep your wage in line with the increasing costs of living.”
Most people incorrectly assume that you need a university degree to land a high paying job.
“There’s absolutely some professions where you need a degree but there’s also lots of careers where you can progress through the ranks without one.
Construction managers, retail buyers, mine workers, IT managers and procurement managers are all top jobs paying in excess of 100K that you don’t need a degree for, Gibbings said.
It’s also important to keep your ear to the ground when it comes to what skills are in demand and what industries are booming, the expert explained.
“It’s important to say ‘it’s not about the job coming to me’, ‘it’s about me going to where the work is’.”
“It’s basic law of economics – supply and demand. If you’ve got a highly valued skill and demand is high for it – go to that area. It’s easier to negotiate a higher wage.”
Instead of being a jack of all trades, Gibbings said experts pay more.
“While we love the idea of being divers, we pay more for experts – we always have and we always will. When you’re the expert, work finds you.”
You also shouldn’t be afraid of the ‘side economy’ which allows you to stay in a secure job while also building a ‘side business’, the expert explained.
“A lot of people these days talk about the ‘side economy’ where you have a ‘side gig’ or a side hustle’. The great thing about that is its almost like a dual track: you’ve got your permanent job and then you have a business you’re building on the side.
“Some people have a little fashion business or skin care business they’re growing on the side but also have the security of their permanent job. And you can do both!”
